A performance only exists once: that night, in that room, with those people. That fleeting energy is something I had started to miss in my work as a filmmaker, and it came back in a very special way within the theatre community. Thank you so much for your trust in creating this piece together @charlichung
I’m incredibly proud of this production. What a special experience it was to create this piece, with all departments working side by side on a live show to build one beautiful world.
Romeo and Julia is a story that never stands still. It jumps from street to bedroom, from party to grave. The set design was built around a large LED wall on stage, behind the actors. With film we could move from location to location in a heartbeat, without slow set changes or blackouts breaking the tension. Julia lives mostly inside, in a protected home. Romeo’s world is outside, in the open night.
The play is set in the Netherlands, in this day and age, so we went looking for locations right here. Growing up in this country, I had rarely experienced it as cinematic. We filmed in the neighborhoods of the Bijlmermeer, Overvecht and Hoogvliet, and in the industrial landscapes of the Botlek, the Maasvlakte and the viaducts of the Rotterdam ring road.
This architecture of concrete and steel stands in contrast to the tenderness of Romeo and Julia’s love.
